Bashkortostan, a Republic in the Russian Federation, is about the size of Arkansas and located 700 miles east of Moscow. 450 years ago a Friendship Alliance was established between the Russians and the Bashkirs. There are more than 120 nationalities represented in the approximately 4 million people living here today. The Republic is rich in oil and natural gas as well as minerals.
Today, the descendents of the Russian immigrants makeup about one-third of the population and are Russian Orthodox. Over one-half of the population follows Sunni Islam most of whom are descendants of the indigenous population. The evangelical movement began the latter part of the 1800’s in Russia. Yet persecution has not destroyed the church. Believers have become stronger in the Word and in their commitment to their beliefs. Less than .1% of those living here are evangelical Believers. There are only 24 Baptist churches in the Republic. Most congregations are small and their pastor is bi-vocational and has limited time to devote to the outreach work.
